Starting of Anvil Band

The seed of Anvil started to grow in 1973 in Toronto when two high school friends Steve Kudlow and Robb Reiner, started playing music. The first band appearance was in 1978 with Steve Kudlow, Robb Reiner, Dave Allison, and Ian Dickson under the name “Lips.”

They came into the industry intending to push the British Heavy Metal style a step further. They were at the pinnacle in the early 80s with their first independent album release in 1981 called Hard’ N’ Heavy.

Afterward, Attic Records signed them and released their independent album as the debut album for the company. Then they were hooking the opening slots in tours like Iron Maiden and Motorhead and playing at festival dates in Japan and England. Later in 1983, the Forged-in-Fire album gave more strength to the band.

But the straight path of success got rough for Anvil when Attic released the band from contract to gain a better stateside deal. But the big label offer never took shape. While the band was hanging in the void, the heavy metal style exploded with a big wave of great metal bands.

Anvil was the inspiration for many bands, including Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax; they all went off to a flying start. Their success was far beyond then Anvil has ever recorded.

In 1987, they came back in the game with the follow-ups of “Forged in Fire” and “Strength of Steel,” but uncreative Strength of Steel killed the momentum. After that, the band tries to revive with “Pound for Pound,” but it was too late, and the band started to break down with the departure of Dave Allison in 1989.

Following the break down it was a bumpy ride for Anvil. They could not release one good album afterward and remains limited to Europe.
